Young High School Students Discover Golf with Lunchtime Launch It

Golf came to life at Young High School last Friday, with over 220 students swapping classrooms for clubs during a Lunchtime Launch It session that had everyone laughing, competing, and discovering just how fun golf can be.

Delivered by Golf NSW and Jack Newton Junior Golf (JNJG), the program brought the game straight into the school, giving students, many of them first-timers, a chance to try something completely new.

With indoor simulators and a big screen showing every shot, it didn’t take long for students to get hooked.

“I’ve never played golf before, but it was actually really fun,” said Year 12 student Molly.

“Me and Mia are going to head up to the Young Golf Club after school and give it a proper go!”

Mia added, “We just thought we’d try it for a laugh, but now we’re keen to learn more. It’s chill, but also kind of challenging. I can see why people get hooked!”

Teachers joined the fun too. Head Teacher of PDHPE Paula Dankert said, “Even the students that don’t normally play sport were giving it a crack. The energy was amazing, and it even sparked a bit of friendly competition with the teachers. We’re definitely doing this again next year.”

Over the morning, students and teachers each hit three balls into the net, testing their distance and technique.

Liam, a Year 12 student, smashed a 198.6-metre drive and proudly claimed, “It was even better to beat all of the teachers!”

Kianna, another Year 12 student, said swinging a golf club felt surprisingly similar to cricket and could even help improve her shots.

With a mix of fun, competition, and hands-on learning, the event was more than just a game. It was an invitation for students to explore golf and connect with Young Golf Club. The excitement on the day showed that golf doesn’t have to be intimidating. It can be fast, friendly, and totally accessible.

Plans are already underway to bring Lunchtime Launch It back in 2026, and with the buzz from this year’s session, it’s clear golf has found some new fans at Young High.
